The rule, made simple

90 days in any 180. Easy to say, easy to get wrong.

The window moves with you every single day, so counting by hand fails exactly when it matters. SchengenZen does the counting for every date, past and future.

  1. One area, one count. Days in France, Spain or Switzerland all add up to the same 90.
  2. Arrival and departure count. Even a few hours on the first and last day.
  3. Nothing resets. Each day leaves your window exactly 180 days later.

Enter a day later, stay a month longer.

One past trip to Italy, 1–30 June. Two entry dates, one day apart:

Enter 28 September
60
days in a row · leave by 26 Nov
Enter 29 September
90
days in a row · leave by 27 Dec

Same 60 days left on both dates, but one day later lets you stay a full 90: June starts leaving the window just in time. SchengenZen shows this for every date in your calendar.

Questions

Frequently asked

How does the Schengen 90/180 rule work?

You can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen Area. On every day you are inside, look back over the 180 days ending that day: if they hold more than 90 Schengen days, you are over the limit. All Schengen countries share one count, and the days you arrive and leave both count as full days.

Is SchengenZen free?

Yes. Counting your days is free: your days left, the 180-day window, the calendar, every past trip and one planned trip. Premium adds automatic tracking, your exact latest exit date, unlimited planned trips, the trip planner, alerts before day 90, several people and your full history rebuilt from photos.

Does it match the official EU calculator?

Yes. SchengenZen applies the rule day by day with the same method as the European Commission's short-stay calculator, so the results match. The count is only as complete as your trips, so look over them before a big journey.

Why can I sometimes stay longer than my days left?

Days left is today's balance. While you stay, old days keep leaving the 180-day window, so the stay you can start can be much longer. SchengenZen shows the exact longest stay for any entry date, so you never have to guess.

How does automatic tracking work, and is it private?

With location set to Always, your iPhone saves the country you are in each day, in the background, using low-power location signals. The country is worked out on your iPhone. Your trips stay on your device and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud. There is no account and no ads.

Can I track my partner or children too?

Yes. Each person has their own trips and their own 90 days, because the rule applies to each traveller separately. With Family Sharing, people in your family group can also use Premium on their own iPhone.

Does the rule apply to me?

It applies to non-EU citizens on short stays, whether visa-free or with a short-stay Schengen visa. It does not apply to EU, EEA or Swiss citizens, or to time covered by a residence permit or long-stay visa in the country that issued it. You can switch off any country whose days should not count.
